This document is an introduction to two advanced mathematical computations that
provide algorithmic solutions to a variety of problems in commutative algebra
and algebraic geometry. These two techniques are Buchberger's algorithm for
computing Gröbner Bases and Wu's method for computing Characteristic Sets.
The two algorithms have been extensively studied, developed, refined, and they
have been implemented on most computer algebra systems.
